Southwell played it's part in our season opener as the Nottinghamshire town basked in sunshine to welcome a smattering of connections on a fine Sunday afternoon for racing. A new season, a first runner, the COVID-19 protocols added another variable to the days proceedings although once successfully negotiated it does feel like business as usual.
There was much less of the unknown about our runner Silver Man who we thought (a) might be high enough in the weights and (b) would need a true stamina test. The 13 year old has had a productive Spring and retains plenty of enthusiasm that belies his age, a fact held up as he bowled along in the front two for much of the first two circuits under Tabitha Worsley.
The pace wasn't a strong one though and Silver Man, who went off 22/1 in the 3m Handicap, ran with plenty of credit to finish 6th after the pace quickened mid-way through the final circuit. He has come back fine though and we'll look for other opportunities at staying distances while the Summer ground remains good.
